Visa Update (2026): The 150-Hour Japanese Study Certificate Is No Longer Sufficient
Important Update: Japan has introduced new student visa screening standards that place greater emphasis on an applicant's actual Japanese language ability.
Previously, many student visa applicants could satisfy the language requirement by submitting a certificate showing they had completed 150 hours of Japanese language study. While this demonstrated that an applicant had spent time learning Japanese, it did not necessarily prove their ability to communicate in the language.
Under the new rules introduced in 2026, a 150-hour study certificate alone is no longer sufficient for student visa screening.
Instead, applicants are generally expected to demonstrate their Japanese language ability by:
Passing a recognized Japanese language proficiency examination, such as the JLPT, NAT-TEST, or another accepted examination; or
Successfully completing a Japanese language assessment conducted by the educational institution they plan to attend, in accordance with the latest immigration guidelines.
This change reflects Japan's efforts to ensure that international students are better prepared for academic life, everyday communication, and future career opportunities in Japan.
If you are planning to study in Japan, it is strongly recommended that you begin learning Japanese early and consider taking an approved language proficiency test before applying for your student visa.

Understanding the Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

Unlike the visa itself, the COE is issued in Japan by the Immigration Services Agency after your school submits the necessary paperwork.
