Structured Curriculum Aimed at Official Koto Certification:

The program follows the traditional Ikuta-ryu teaching method, allowing even complete beginners to progress step-by-step toward certification.

  • Learn the basics: posture, finger technique, notation reading, and core repertoire. The goal is to obtain the Shoden (Introductory Certificate).

  • Advance to more complex pieces and expressive techniques. Students aim for the Chuden (Intermediate Certificate), with the possibility of achieving Okuden (Advanced Certificate) for fast learners.

  • Performance & Recording Opportunities
    Optional recitals and professional recordings are held regularly to showcase progress.

  • Additional examination and certificate fees may apply.

For living expenses and extracurricular activities such as Koto performances, other related events, and visits to shrines and temples, entry fees and transportation expenses are to be borne by the students.

  • No, don't worry! Japanese classes are available for beginners, koto lessons are taught in English.

  • Yes. The school regularly organizes koto workshops for foreign tourists, and they can introduce eligible students to part-time opportunities assisting with these events.

    Important Note:

    • Working part-time is only possible if the student obtains ‘Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence’ (資格外活動許可) from immigration authorities, after entering Japan.

    • Working hours are capped at 28 hours per week (as per visa regulations).
